A new effort has been made in Eastern Kentucky to diversify the state’s energy resources, creating new types of jobs for those out of work due to the decline in the coal mining industry. Berkeley Energy Group and EDF Energies have partnered together to begin constructing a multi-million solar-energy farm over reclaimed mine areas just outside Pikeville. The facility will be the largest in the state and one of a kind. It will include immense quantities of solar panels expected to produce between 50 to 100 megawatts of electricity. The project will also offer an estimated 100 jobs, most of which will be offered to unemployed coal miners.
